Melbourne Airport Passenger Safety: What Travellers Should Know After Recent Rideshare Scam Reports

Recent reports involving passengers leaving Melbourne Airport raise a question every traveller should ask before getting into a vehicle: do you know who is actually picking you up?

Before you get in

Know who is picking you up.

Check the plate, the driver, the booking and the fare before you get in.

Earlier this month, a Melbourne passenger described a frightening experience after leaving Melbourne Airport in a vehicle she believed was connected to her Uber booking.

According to media reports, she gave her airport pickup PIN after getting into the car. The driver allegedly told her the PIN was not working and offered to take her to her destination for a separate payment.

The situation reportedly escalated into a dispute over money, with the driver demanding an extra $20. The passenger said she was not able to leave the car until she called Triple Zero.

Uber said the man was not registered as an Uber driver. Victoria Police said they had spoken to the passenger and made inquiries, but had not received a report that she had been locked in the car.

The incident is a reminder that the issue is bigger than choosing between a taxi, a rideshare or a private transfer. It is about verifying the vehicle, the driver and the booking before your journey starts.

What Melbourne Airport tells passengers to check

Melbourne Airport has dedicated pickup areas for taxis and rideshare services, and publishes specific advice for passengers on verifying their ride.

  • Check that the number plate and the driver's photo match the details in your app.
  • If your booking uses a PIN, confirm it with the driver before you get in.
  • Never get into a different vehicle from the one assigned to your booking.
  • If something worries you, contact your rideshare or transport provider directly.
  • Don't accept a ride from anyone offering one inside or outside the terminals.

The airport's advice on PINs is simple: if there's a problem with the PIN, don't get in.

That last point matters most. After a long flight you may be tired, juggling luggage, travelling with children or new to Melbourne Airport, and an offer of a quick ride can seem convenient.

But you should always know who you are travelling with, and whether that vehicle is connected to the booking you made.

News context

This is not the first time concerns have been raised about Melbourne Airport pickups

Concerns about unauthorised drivers approaching passengers at Melbourne Airport are not new. Nine's A Current Affair has previously filmed touts approaching arriving travellers at the terminals and offering rides outside the normal booking and taxi rank processes.

Touting has been illegal in Victoria since 2019. Safe Transport Victoria says anyone who approaches people directly, or holds up a sign offering a ride, can be fined up to $10,000, and it has run enforcement operations at the airport with Melbourne Airport and the Australian Federal Police.

This is an important distinction. Most accredited taxi and rideshare drivers working around Melbourne Airport are doing legitimate work and following the rules. The problem starts when passengers can't easily tell the difference between:

  • the vehicle they actually booked
  • an authorised taxi or commercial passenger vehicle
  • someone simply presenting themselves as a legitimate transport provider

That is why verification matters.

Before getting into a vehicle at Melbourne Airport, check these five things

Whether you are taking a taxi, a rideshare or a pre-booked airport transfer, ME CABS recommends checking a few basic details before you leave the airport.

  1. Check the registration number

Look at the number plate and compare it with the details you have been given. If it doesn't match your booking, don't get in until the difference has been explained.

  2. Confirm the driver

If your provider has supplied the driver's name, photo, contact number or other details, check them. With a pre-arranged service, you should be able to establish that the driver is actually there to collect you.

  3. Confirm your booking before the vehicle moves

If your service uses a PIN, a booking reference or another check, complete it before you leave the kerb. Uber's Melbourne Airport pickup process similarly has riders give a PIN and check the driver and vehicle details before getting in. If someone tells you, “The booking isn't working, but I'll take you privately instead,” treat it as a warning sign.

  4. Know what you are expected to pay

Before you travel, know whether your fare is fixed, estimated, metered or calculated in an app. Be cautious if someone unexpectedly asks you to cancel your booking, make a bank transfer or pay in a different way from what you agreed.

  5. Look for the Safe Transport Victoria QR code

Since 1 March 2026, every taxi and rideshare vehicle in Victoria must display an approved Safe Transport Victoria QR code during a trip. Scanning it lets you report unsafe or unfair behaviour straight to the regulator.

The exact meet point depends on your terminal and is sent to you before pickup, with an SMS when the driver is on site.

Your driver's name and vehicle are sent before pickup, so you can identify the car sent for you.

  • A fare agreed up front

Your fare is fixed when you book, with no surge. If you pay by card in the car, a card surcharge may apply.

If something doesn't match or you can't find the car, call 1300 012 018 or WhatsApp us before getting into any other vehicle.

  • Flight tracking

We track your flight, and if it's delayed the pickup is adjusted at no extra charge.

Melbourne Airport asks passengers never to accept a taxi offer made outside an authorised taxi rank or a pre-arranged booking. If someone approaches you in the terminal offering a ride, they are not from ME CABS.

The ME CABS airport pickup rule

If the details don't match, don't get in.

If the car, the registration or the driver doesn't match what you were expecting, verify it before getting in. Airports are busy, vehicles look alike and pickup zones can be confusing, and occasionally a driver has to be changed.

But with a properly managed booking, you can contact the booking provider and confirm the change. You should never feel pressured to get into an unfamiliar vehicle just because someone says they are there to collect you.

Victorian passenger transport rules are also getting stronger

Victoria introduced commercial passenger vehicle reforms through 2026 to strengthen safety, transparency and accountability across taxi and rideshare services. Among them:

  • Since 1 March 2026, taxis and rideshare vehicles must display an approved Safe Transport Victoria QR code during every trip.
  • Drivers must record every booking service they accept work through with Safe Transport Victoria, and keep those details up to date.
  • Drivers may only display signage for the booking service they are working for at the time.

From ME CABS' perspective, stronger verification and accountability are good news. Passengers should be able to identify who is transporting them.

Drivers who work professionally also deserve protection from rogue operators who damage trust across the whole passenger transport industry.

This should not become a taxi-versus-rideshare argument

Incidents like this are quickly framed as taxi versus Uber. We don't think that helps anyone. Thousands of legitimate taxi, rideshare and private transport drivers move passengers safely around Melbourne every day.

The more useful question is: can the passenger verify the service? A professional passenger transport system makes it easy to establish:

  • who accepted the booking
  • who is driving
  • which vehicle is providing the service
  • how much the passenger is expected to pay
  • who is accountable if something goes wrong

That benefits passengers, legitimate drivers, Melbourne Airport and the whole transport industry.

The standard should be the same

  • Identifiable booking provider
  • Identifiable driver
  • Identifiable vehicle
  • Clear fare method
  • Passenger support
  • Accountability

What should international visitors do when arriving at Melbourne Airport?

If you are visiting Melbourne for the first time, a few extra precautions make your arrival much easier:

  • Arrange your transport before you travel where you can.
  • Save your booking confirmation.
  • Keep the driver's or transport provider's contact details handy.
  • Use Melbourne Airport's designated pickup locations.
  • Check the registration before you load your luggage.
  • Don't accept unsolicited transport offers inside or outside the terminal.
  • If your booking uses a PIN, confirm it before you travel.

And if something doesn't feel right, stay in a busy part of the airport while you contact your transport provider.

Travelling with children or a larger group?

Verification matters even more when you travel with children, older passengers or a lot of luggage. An unexpected change of vehicle can cause problems with:

  • child restraints
  • vehicle capacity
  • luggage space
  • accessibility
  • the pickup location
  • the type of vehicle you need

ME CABS customers can request a suitable vehicle when booking, including maxis for up to 10 passengers and accessible transport where available. Planning these needs before you land is usually much easier than arranging them at the airport.

Arriving in Melbourne?

Arrange your airport pickup before you land.

Melbourne Airport handles millions of passengers every year, and the overwhelming majority finish their onward journey without incident.

But recent reports are a useful reminder to take a few seconds to verify your transport before getting into any vehicle.

Check the driver. Check the vehicle. Check the registration. Confirm the booking. Then travel.

  • Pre-booked pickups
  • Fixed fares
  • Driver and vehicle details
  • Flight tracking

Should I accept a ride from somebody who approaches me at Melbourne Airport?

No. Melbourne Airport advises passengers not to accept a ride from anyone offering one inside or outside the terminals, and touting has been illegal in Victoria since 2019. Use the taxi rank, your rideshare app's pickup zone or a service you have booked yourself.

Do taxis and rideshare vehicles in Victoria need a Safe Transport Victoria QR code?

Yes. Since 1 March 2026, every taxi and rideshare vehicle in Victoria must display an approved Safe Transport Victoria QR code during a trip. Scanning it lets passengers report safety, fare or driver-conduct concerns directly to the regulator.

Yes. ME CABS takes Melbourne Airport bookings online, on 1300 012 018 or on WhatsApp, up to 30 days ahead. You get a booking confirmation, and your driver's name, vehicle and the exact meet point for your terminal are sent before pickup.

Where do I meet my ME CABS driver at Melbourne Airport?

Meet-and-greet is available on every pre-booked airport pickup: choose it when you book, add A$35 to the fare, and your driver waits inside the arrivals hall with a sign showing your name. Without it, your driver meets you at the airport's public pickup zone at no extra cost — near the Parkroyal for T1, T2 and T3, or on Level 1 at T4. Either way, the exact meet point depends on your terminal and is sent to you before pickup, with an SMS when the driver is on site. If you're unsure after collecting your luggage, call ME CABS on 1300 012 018 before getting into any other vehicle.
