A “gurgling stream”, and the east’s hospital.
Wantirna takes its name from the land’s first people: it’s a Woi Wurrung word thought to mean “a gurgling stream”, chosen in 1913 when locals wanted a name of their own. It fits — Dandenong Creek winds along the north and west of the suburb, feeding the big bushland parklands. From an 1840s cattle run called Bushy Park, it grew into a settled, leafy, family suburb of around 14,000.
It also has a quiet claim to fame: in 1963 Wantirna voted 89% for severance — the strongest of any district — and helped create the City of Knox. Today it’s best known for one thing in particular: Knox Private Hospital on Mountain Highway, the major private hospital for the whole eastern suburbs. ME CABS is the calm, fixed-fare way to get to it, and everywhere else.

No train here — but the freeway runs straight through it.
Wantirna has no railway station — it developed late precisely because the line never reached it. The nearest stations are Bayswater, Boronia and Ferntree Gully on the Belgrave line, a few kilometres east. What Wantirna has instead is the freeway: EastLink runs straight through it, making it the closest Knox suburb to the city and the airport. So a booked car isn’t a fallback here — it’s how a freeway suburb travels.
The hospital trip.
To Knox Private right here, or an appointment — with an accessible vehicle if you need one.
The early flight.
Door to terminal up EastLink — no drive-and-park at a station before dawn.
The run to the train.
Dropped at Bayswater or Boronia for the city commute, picked up at night.
The Westfield run.
Across to Westfield Knox and home again with the shopping.
The late night home.
After the buses stop — the group of five, straight to the door.
The Cabcharge trip.
On a docket, door to door, for a local business or clinic.
That’s the job ME CABS does here — not a substitute for a train that never came, the way a freeway suburb actually gets around.
Our anchor in the west of Knox.
The same fixed-fare service runs across the surrounding suburbs and the wider council.
Wantirna sits in the City of Knox — see the Knox council page for the full picture. Bayswater, Boronia, Knoxfield and Scoresby are our sibling Knox suburbs.

In a hospital suburb, access & simple payment matter more.

ME CABS provides wheelchair-accessible and mobility vehicles on request, and keeps the payment simple — Cabcharge is accepted on every trip, alongside card and cash, with a fixed fare shown before you book and no card fee on Cabcharge — useful for practices, aged-care and disability providers arranging non-emergency patient and visitor transport.

Knox Private Hospital sits on Mountain Highway — the major private hospital for the whole eastern suburbs. People come here from right across the east, and getting to and from a hospital is exactly the trip ME CABS does best. A booked, fixed-fare car takes the two hardest parts out of it — timing and uncertainty.

There’s more to Wantirna than the hospital.
Green & cultural Wantirna
For a freeway suburb, Wantirna is surprisingly green. Koomba Park — a big native bushland park along Dandenong Creek — runs through it, and it’s home to the Australian Jazz Museum, the national jazz archive, a genuinely unusual thing to find in the suburbs. ME CABS does the easy local runs: a walk along the creek, a visit to the museum, a family day out.
The wider reach
Westfield Knox is right across Burwood Highway in Wantirna South for shopping, dining and a night out, and with EastLink at the door, the city, Frankston and the bay are an easy fixed-fare run — with the Dandenong Ranges a short drive east through Boronia when you want the hills. One agreed price each way, no parking, no toll guesswork.

Fleet note
About 9 in 10 ME CABS cars are hybrid or electric — primarily Tesla and Lexus hybrids — plus wheelchair-accessible and mobility vehicles on request.
A number, not a slogan.
Wantirna lives up to its name — the “gurgling stream” of Dandenong Creek and the big bushland of Koomba Park run right through it. Our fleet fits that: about 90% hybrid and electric, so the standard ride is simply the cleaner, quieter one. No badge, no lecture — just the default. Run your trip and see the real estimated emissions versus an older cab.
