The suburb that grew up around its station.
Few suburbs are as devoted to their railway as Hughesdale. It’s named after James Hughes, a City of Oakleigh mayor who — with the “Poath Road Railway Station League” — campaigned to win the area its own station, which opened in 1925, and the suburb grew up around it. The love runs right down to the street signs: a remarkable number of Hughesdale’s roads are named after famous British railway stations.
Streets named after British stations
It’s the smallest suburb in Monash — barely 2 km² — with a strong Greek-Australian heritage, the revived Poath Road Village café strip at its heart, and the biggest mall in the country minutes away. Small, walkable, well-connected — and ME CABS covers everything the beloved train can’t.

take the train — double the city average
We’d never argue with the train. We do what it can’t.
Hughesdale doesn’t just have a station — it was built for one. It’s among the most train-minded suburbs in Melbourne, ranked 12th of 328 for commuting by rail: about one in six residents take the train to work, double the city average, and the station is a short walk from almost everywhere. We’re for the trips the train was never going to do.

Hughesdale → MEL
Hughesdale sits close in — not at 4am with bags. Flight tracked, fixed fare set before you book.
The run the train was never going to do.
Roughly 33 km and 35–40 minutes off-peak via the Monash Freeway and CityLink to Tullamarine — one of the shorter Monash airport runs, since Hughesdale sits close in. We watch your flight, build in a buffer, and set your fixed fare before you book — no early-morning surge, no pre-dawn walk to the platform. Avalon (AVV) too.

Poath Road Village & Chadstone on the doorstep.
Poath Road Village
The heart of Hughesdale is Poath Road Village — the revived café-and-boutique strip by the station, with its inter-war shopfronts and a relaxed, local feel. It’s the kind of place you walk to for a coffee, and the kind of suburb where a fixed-fare car handles the trips that start or end here: the airport, a dinner out, a day across town. Small, friendly, and well-served.
Chadstone on the doorstep
And then there’s the giant next door. Chadstone — the biggest shopping centre in the country — is minutes up the road, and Hughesdale has long been its closest station. ME CABS does the run the easy way: dropped at the entrance, collected with the bags, no trek across 10,000 car parks. A fixed fare there and back, with the cinema, Legoland and the food precincts all part of the day.
Two major hospitals, either side of the suburb.
Monash Medical Centre and the Victorian Heart Hospital in Clayton are a short run east, with Cabrini in Malvern a short run west. For appointments, day procedures, discharge pickups and visiting family, a booked, fixed-fare car removes the two hardest parts — timing and uncertainty.
ME CABS provides non-emergency patient and visitor transport — for emergencies always call 000.
Appointments & day surgery
On time, dropped at the right entrance.
Discharge
A reliable ride home when you can't drive after a procedure.
Visiting family
In and home again without the parking and the long walk.
Accessible vehicles
On request, for those who need them.
The reliable family car — and the local account.
Hughesdale is a compact, residential suburb rather than a business hub, so the everyday work is simpler: the reliable family car for the airport, appointments, the school run and a night out. And the payment stays simple: Cabcharge is accepted on every trip, alongside card and cash, with a fixed fare shown before you book, no card fee on Cabcharge, and accessible vehicles on request — handy for the Poath Road Village traders, local professionals and the steady appointments.

| When you want… | ME CABS | Rideshare app | Hail / rank taxi |
|---|---|---|---|
| A price you can trust | Fixed, shown before booking | Surges without warning | Metered — unknown till arrival |
| A car that turns up at 4am | Booked & assigned ahead | Depends who's online | Pot luck at the rank |
| Cabcharge accepted | Yes | No | Sometimes |
| A clean hybrid / EV | ~90% of the fleet | Whatever arrives | Whatever arrives |
| Maxi / group & mobility | Booked to suit | Limited | Limited |
The contrast is booked-driver certainty: a confirmed driver at a price locked before you travel, the runs others decline, Cabcharge handled properly — and a booking you can actually see and change afterwards.
Small suburb, wide reach.
Hughesdale is our small, central anchor in this corner of Monash, and we run the same fixed-fare service across the surrounding suburbs. It sits in the City of Monash — see the hub and the sibling suburb pages as they roll out.

Our fleet — about 9 in 10 hybrid & electric
Primarily Tesla and Lexus hybrids — cleaner, quieter and more comfortable than an older cab — plus wheelchair-accessible and mobility vehicles on request. A greener ride that doesn’t cost you certainty.
Green along the old railway lines.
There’s a quiet poetry to Hughesdale’s green: its linear parks and Galbally Reserve trace the routes of old railway lines, threaded between the tree-lined streets. Our fleet fits that: about 90% hybrid and electric, so the standard ride is simply the cleaner, quieter one. No badge, no lecture — just the default.
A number, not a slogan — run your trip and see the real estimated emissions for a hybrid versus an older cab.
