The Basin was named by a botanist.
Ferdinand von Mueller — Victoria’s Government Botanist and the founder of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens — explored these hills in the 1850s and called the place The Basin, for the way it settles into a green bowl ringed by rising land. The name still fits perfectly: a small, leafy, semi-rural village of around 4,500 people, tucked into the forested foothills of Mount Dandenong.
It runs on village life — the shops and pubs and cafés around The Basin Triangle, a primary school since 1879, and a much-loved community theatre that’s been staging shows since 1954. With the National Park at the back fence and no train of its own, it’s a suburb that has always moved by road. ME CABS is the calm, fixed-fare way to do it.

No train up here — and getting to one is an old Basin tradition.
The Basin has never had a railway station — the nearest are down the hill at Boronia, Ferntree Gully or Bayswater, about 5 km away on the Belgrave line. That’s not new. Back in the 1870s, a local landholder ran his own private coach from The Basin down to Bayswater Station to bring visitors up to the hills. The need hasn’t changed in 150 years — just the car.
A private coach ran from the village down to Bayswater Station, carrying visitors up to the hills.
ME CABS does the same job — door to door on a fixed fare, the modern version of that 1870s coach.
The early flight.
Door to terminal — no pre-dawn drive down the hill to park at a station.
The run down to the train.
Dropped at Boronia or Bayswater for the city commute, picked up at night.
The hospital trip.
To Angliss or Knox Private with someone who can't manage hill roads and platforms.
The night at the theatre.
Or the pub — home safely up the hill, no one nominated to drive.
The day up the mountain.
A maxi to SkyHigh, Olinda or Sassafras, and home again by dark.
The Cabcharge trip.
The group of five with bags, on a docket, door to door.
That’s the job ME CABS does here — the same job that coach did in 1870, done properly, on a fixed fare.
Our anchor at the foot of the mountain.
The same fixed-fare service runs across the surrounding suburbs down the hill and up into the Ranges.
The Basin sits in the City of Knox — see the Knox council page for the full picture. Boronia, Ferntree Gully and Bayswater are our sibling Knox suburbs just down the hill.

The run that matters most — from a hill village with no station.
The Basin → the airport
Roughly 55 km, about 50–55 minutes off-peak — down the hill, then EastLink and CityLink to Tullamarine. From a hill village with no station, this is the run that matters most: door to terminal, flight watched, buffer built in, fixed fare set before you book. No pre-dawn surge.
The airport → The Basin
Land, clear the gate, and your booked driver is already arranged. We track the flight, so a delay doesn’t cost you the car. Ride home up the hill for the price you were quoted — no scramble at the rank.
Also served: Avalon (AVV) transfers on the same fixed-fare basis.
The difference is booked-driver certainty.

A village, not a business park — so the work is simpler.
The everyday work in The Basin is the reliable family car: the airport, appointments and the school run, and the night out down at the Triangle or the theatre. And the payment stays simple — Cabcharge is accepted on every trip, alongside card and cash, with a fixed fare shown before you book and no card fee on Cabcharge.
The everyday village trips
- The reliable family car for the airport and appointments
- The school run and the everyday errands
- A night out at the Triangle or the theatre, home safely
- Cabcharge accepted, alongside card and cash
- A fixed fare shown before you book, receipt after
Angliss is the closest — just down the hill.
Angliss Hospital in Upper Ferntree Gully is the closest, just down the hill, with Knox Private Hospital in Wantirna nearby — both far easier by booked car than by a winding bus route. For appointments, day procedures, discharge pickups and visiting family, a fixed-fare car removes the two hardest parts: timing and uncertainty.
- Book ahead for an appointment time — the car is there, not hoped for.
- Discharge pickup when you're ready, door to door, no platform or stairs.
- Wheelchair-accessible and mobility-friendly vehicles on request.
- Quiet, clean hybrids — easier on anyone who isn't feeling well.
The foot of Mount Dandenong — no suburb sits closer.
From The Basin the road climbs straight into the Dandenong Ranges National Park. ME CABS is the deepest-Ranges page in the set — and The Basin is a destination in its own right, too.
A fixed fare to the summit
Doongalla Forest on the doorstep, the summit and the SkyHigh lookout above, the village shops of Olinda and Sassafras just over the top, the Yarra Valley beyond — a walk, a long lunch, a winery day, with a driver who isn’t one of your group.
A night out, sorted
- A show at The Basin Theatre, staging since 1954
- A meal or a quiet pint around The Basin Triangle
- A walk in the reserves at the foot of the mountain
- Brought up for the evening, taken home — nobody driving
A mountain trip or a night out — booked, fixed price, and nobody nominated to drive back down the hill in the dark.
Choose by how many people and bags.
Flex
Sedan for the everyday Basin ride — airport, the station, appointments, a night out.
Plus
Premium comfort or extra luggage — that bit of space.
Group
Maxi for a group up the mountain, families, airport runs, or a night at the theatre.
Fleet note
About 9 in 10 ME CABS cars are hybrid or electric — primarily Tesla and Lexus hybrids — plus wheelchair-accessible and mobility vehicles on request.
A number, not a slogan.
There may be no greener suburb in Knox than The Basin — a forested green wedge with the National Park, Doongalla and the creek reserves on every side, in a place a botanist thought worth naming. Our fleet fits right in: about 90% hybrid and electric, so the standard ride is simply the cleaner, quieter one — a fitting way to arrive at a national park. No badge, no lecture, just the default. Run your trip and see the real estimated emissions versus an older cab.

The no-station airport run
The BasinNo train up here, and I'd rather not leave the car at a station for a week. A booked car at the door, down the hill, fixed fare to the terminal.
The night at the theatre
The BasinSix of us for a show at The Basin Theatre and a meal at the Triangle. ME CABS brought us in and took us all home. One fixed price, nobody driving.
The mountain day
The BasinBooked a maxi up to SkyHigh and Olinda for the day. Lovely not to be the one on the hill roads, and home by dark.
