Why Ferntree Gully

Named for its ferns, with a rainforest for a backyard.

The name is as literal as it gets: Ferntree Gully is named for the tree ferns that once ran in a green ribbon from the township up to the National Park. That park is still its backdrop — the suburb sits right on the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges, with the rainforest, the lyrebirds and the famous 1000 Steps just above it. Day-trippers have been coming up here for the scenery since the 1870s.

Today it’s a big, leafy, family suburb — around 27,400 people, a busy village and shopping strip by the station, and one of the line’s major premium stations. ME CABS is the calm, fixed-fare way to get around it, out of it — and up into the hills above it.

A big station

One of the line’s real stations. Here’s what it still can’t do.

Ferntree Gully is a premium, fully-staffed stop on the Belgrave line with around 1,000 car spaces and over 100 trains a day. For the city commute, it’s about as good as the outer east gets. But even a great station only does one kind of trip.

The early flight with luggage.

Before trains start — no change at Flinders Street with bags.

The 1000 Steps on a Saturday.

Carpark full by 10am — you just want dropping at the trailhead.

The deeper Park.

Sherbrooke, Grants, Olinda and Mount Dandenong are well off the rail line.

The hospital trip to Angliss.

Just up the hill, with someone who can't manage platforms and stairs.

The late night home.

After the last service, door to door, up the hill.

The Cabcharge or account trip.

On a docket, door to door, for a local business.

That’s the gap ME CABS fills — not a replacement for a good station, the answer for everything the line can’t carry.

The airport → Ferntree Gully

Land, clear the gate, and your booked driver is already arranged. We track the flight, so a delay doesn’t cost you the car. Ride home for the price you were quoted — no scramble at the rank.

Cabcharge accepted

A big family suburb with a busy village strip.

ME CABS keeps it simple: a reliable family car — school runs, appointments, the airport — with Cabcharge accepted on every trip, alongside card and cash. Your fixed fare is shown before you book, with no card fee on Cabcharge and an itemised receipt after the trip.

Angliss Hospital & medical

Angliss is right on your doorstep.

Angliss Hospital is right on Ferntree Gully’s doorstep, just up the hill in Upper Ferntree Gully — one of the shortest, most familiar hospital runs we do — with Knox Private Hospital in Wantirna close by. For appointments, day procedures, discharge pickups and visiting family, a booked, fixed-fare car removes the two hardest parts: timing and uncertainty.

  • Book ahead for an appointment time — the car is there, not hoped for.
  • Discharge pickup when you're ready, door to door, no platform or stairs.
  • Wheelchair-accessible and mobility-friendly vehicles on request.
  • Quiet, clean hybrids — easier on anyone who isn't feeling well.
Fern-lined rainforest trail in the Dandenong Ranges National Park above Ferntree Gully — the 1000 Steps Kokoda Track Memorial Walk
The signature trip

Coming to climb? We’ll get you there — and back.

The 1000 Steps / Kokoda Track Memorial Walk is one of Melbourne’s most-loved climbs — a steep, fern-lined ascent through rainforest, and a memorial to the Australians who served on the Kokoda Track. It draws thousands every week, and the carpark is routinely full by 10am on weekends. ME CABS solves that — book it from anywhere, and we bring you to the hill.

Carpark full by ~10am — we drop you right at the trailhead.

A cleaner ride

A number, not a slogan.

Ferntree Gully lives and breathes its green — named for its tree ferns, backed by mountain-ash rainforest, lyrebirds and the National Park. Our fleet fits right in: about 90% hybrid and electric, so the standard ride is simply the cleaner, quieter one — a fitting way to arrive at a national park. No badge, no lecture, just the default. Run your trip and see the real estimated emissions versus an older cab.
