Why Wheelers Hill

High, green, and no train station.

The name is literal. Wheelers Hill rises to about 152 metres — one of the highest points in metropolitan Melbourne — named after James Wheeler, an Irish settler whose 1850s farm ran along the ridge. In the horse-and-cart days the Wheelers Hill Hotel was the resting point before the long haul into the city to sell farm goods; the rise was even used for early motoring hill climbs in 1905. High ground, then and now.

Today it’s one of Monash’s greenest, most settled family suburbs — nearly a third parkland, wrapped around the 127-hectare Jells Park, with leafy streets and views east to the Dandenong Ranges. It’s also, notably, the Monash suburb without its own train station — which is exactly why a reliable, fixed-fare car matters more here than almost anywhere. ME CABS is the easy way down the hill and back.

The suburb without a station

No train up the hill. So we’re the easy option.

Most of our suburb pages tip their hat to a great train line. Wheelers Hill doesn’t have one — there’s no railway station in the suburb, and getting to the city or the airport by public transport means a bus to a distant station and a long transfer (well over two hours to Tullamarine). The buses do the daily errands, and the Monash Freeway and EastLink are close for driving. But for the trips that matter, a booked car isn’t the fallback here — it’s the sensible first choice.

The early flight with luggage

Door to terminal — no bus-then-train marathon at dawn with the bags, no leaving the car at the airport for a week.

The airport pickup for family

Met at the terminal and driven up the hill to the door, flight tracked — a delay doesn't cost you the car.

The hospital, the school run & the night out

Monash Medical Centre a short run west, kids to a match across town, the family to dinner — one fixed fare, door to door.

No easy train up here

With no station and a 2½-hour bus alternative, a booked, flight-tracked car is simply the obvious way.

Melbourne Airport — both directions

With no station, the car is the obvious way.

Roughly 40 km and about 40 minutes off-peak via the Monash Freeway and CityLink to Tullamarine. With no train up the hill and a 2½-hour bus slog the only public-transport option, a booked car is the obvious way — we watch your flight, build in a buffer, and set your fixed fare before you book, with no early-morning surge and no scramble at the rank on the way home. Avalon (AVV) too.

The signature run

Jells Park, the schools & the hill.

Jells Park

One of Melbourne’s best-loved metropolitan parks — 127 hectares along Dandenong Creek, 9 km of walking and cycling trails around Jells Lake, playgrounds, the T House café and the birdlife, drawing around a million visitors a year. ME CABS does the fixed-fare run for a family day, a big picnic, a function on the ovals, or a group cycling trip — everyone dropped and collected, no parking scramble on a busy weekend.

Schools, culture & the view

It’s a schools suburb — Caulfield Grammar’s Wheelers Hill campus and strong local primaries — with the Museum of Australian Photography (a Harry Seidler building) and the library on the corner of Jells and Ferntree Gully Roads. School runs, sport, exams, open days and cultural outings are all easy, reliable fixed-fare trips.

And the hill itself

High, green and leafy, with views east to the Dandenong Ranges — a settled family suburb where the everyday trips start and end at a comfortable home, and a booked car takes the friction out of the ones that leave it.

Hospital & medical travel

The Clayton health precinct — a short run west.

Monash Medical Centre and the Victorian Heart Hospital in Clayton are a short run west of Wheelers Hill, with other options across the south-east. For appointments, day procedures, discharge pickups and visiting family, a booked, fixed-fare car removes the two hardest parts — timing and uncertainty — and with no train up the hill, it’s often the only sensible way.

ME CABS provides non-emergency patient and visitor transport — for emergencies always call 000.

Appointments & day surgery

On time, dropped at the right entrance.

Discharge

A reliable ride home when you can't drive after a procedure.

Visiting family

In and home again without the parking and the long walk.

Accessible vehicles

On request, for those who need them.

Cabcharge & family travel

The reliable car for a family suburb.

Wheelers Hill is family-and-professional country rather than an office precinct, so the trips are practical: the airport, appointments, the school run, sport and a night out. With no station up the hill, a booked car is the everyday default — and ME CABS keeps it simple: Cabcharge accepted on every trip, alongside card and cash, with a fixed fare shown before you book, no card fee on Cabcharge, and an itemised receipt. Recurring school, sport and airport trips, booked ahead and assigned to a real driver.

Family & airport runs

To and from Tullamarine, flight-tracked, booked ahead.

The school & sport run

Recurring trips booked ahead, a fixed fare each time.

Cabcharge accepted

Alongside card and cash, with an itemised receipt.

The night out & late pickup

Door to door — no driving, no leaving the car up the hill.

A cleaner ride

A green ride for the leafiest suburb.

Few Melbourne suburbs are as green as Wheelers Hill — nearly a third parkland, wrapped around Jells Park and the Dandenong Creek corridor, threaded with the Scotchmans Creek and EastLink trails. Our fleet fits right in: about 90% hybrid and electric, so the standard ride is simply the cleaner, quieter one. No badge, no lecture — just the default, which suits a suburb that lives among the trees.
