Why Notting Hill

Parcels & passengers, since 1878.

Notting Hill has an origin story a taxi company could hardly invent. In the 1870s a settler named Thomas Wilkinson ran a Cobb & Co coach service carrying parcels and passengers along Ferntree Gully Road; his refreshment stop, the Half Way House, became the Notting Hill Hotel, still standing today. He’s credited with the name, after Notting Hill in London. Carrying people and packages between here and the city is, more or less, still the job — we’ve just swapped the coach for a hybrid.

A century on, the residential heart became something else notable: the Westerfield estate, built by AV Jennings in the late 1950s as Australia’s first fully pre-planned suburb — no through roads, designed to be walked. It’s a small place, barely 1.6 km², but it wraps around Monash University and one of the country’s biggest business precincts, so by day it’s far busier than its size suggests. ME CABS covers everything the trains and buses can’t.

A small suburb, big on connection

Well-linked. We do what the network can’t.

For its size, Notting Hill is remarkably well-linked: the Monash Freeway runs along its western edge, Ferntree Gully and Blackburn Roads carry buses to the university and the city, and the Suburban Rail Loop’s new “Monash” station is being built right here, on the edge of the estate. For the daily commute, the options keep getting better — and we’d never argue with that. We’re for the trips the network, even a shiny new one, was never going to do.

The university & research precinct

Notting Hill wraps around Monash University’s Clayton campus — Australia’s largest — and the research precinct beside it, the CSIRO and the Australian Synchrotron among them. It means a steady stream of academics, researchers, conference visitors and international guests, all needing a reliable, fixed-fare car to the airport or across town, with Cabcharge accepted.

The Notting Hill Hotel

And the landmark that started it all: the Notting Hill Hotel, born as a coaching stop in the 1870s and licensed since 1891 — long a favourite of students and locals, and famously run by publican Kath Byer for decades. A fixed-fare car home from the pub is the oldest idea on this page, done properly.

The estate in between

Between the offices and the university sits the walkable Westerfield estate — Australia’s first pre-planned suburb — with its reserves and community hall: the everyday trips that start or end at home, the airport, a day out, the run back home.

Hospital & medical travel

The Clayton health precinct — a short run south.

Notting Hill sits just north of the Clayton health precinct — Monash Medical Centre, Jessie McPherson Private and the Victorian Heart Hospital are a short run south, with other options across Monash. For appointments, day procedures, discharge pickups and visiting family, a booked, fixed-fare car removes the two hardest parts — timing and uncertainty.

ME CABS provides non-emergency patient and visitor transport — for emergencies always call 000.

Appointments & day surgery

On time, dropped at the right entrance.

Discharge

Visiting family

Cabcharge & the precinct

Melbourne’s biggest jobs hub outside the CBD.

By day, Notting Hill is business — the Ferntree Gully Road offices and the wider Monash National Employment & Innovation Cluster, Victoria’s largest jobs hub outside the CBD, sit right here next to the university, the CSIRO and the Australian Synchrotron. That’s a lot of staff airport runs, visiting academics, client pickups and after-hours travel — and ME CABS keeps it simple: Cabcharge accepted on every trip, alongside card and cash, with a fixed fare shown before you book, no card fee on Cabcharge, and an itemised receipt after the trip.

Our fleet — about 9 in 10 hybrid & electric

Primarily Tesla and Lexus hybrids — cleaner, quieter and more comfortable than an older cab — plus wheelchair-accessible and mobility vehicles on request. A greener ride that doesn’t cost you certainty.

A cleaner ride

A quiet green to a walkable suburb.

There’s a quiet green to Notting Hill — a walkable estate designed around pedestrian paths, the reserves at Westerfield Drive and Samada Street, and the old Scotchmans Creek lines that once ran through it. Our fleet fits that: about 90% hybrid and electric, so the standard ride is simply the cleaner, quieter one. No badge, no lecture — just the default.

A number, not a slogan — run your trip and see the real estimated emissions for a hybrid versus an older cab.

The Feeling

You can take the bus to campus or the train to work, but not to the airport at dawn with two suitcases, or to the hospital with someone who can’t manage stairs, or home from a work function after a long day. For those trips, there’s a particular calm in knowing the car is already booked. It’s booked. It’s a fixed price. It’s a clean, quiet car.
